Textured Breast Implants Recall and What You Need to Know

The FDA recall of textured breast implants may cause concern to patients who currently have breast implants, especially those who have Allergan model implants or may not know the actual manufacturer or model of their implants. Here are a few things you should know:

Why Are Allergan Breast Implants Being Recalled?

Textured breast implants made by Allergan have been linked to an unusual cancer. The disease is anaplastic large-cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL), a rare cancer of the immune system. It is not breast cancer, but rather a type of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma that develops in the scar tissue and fluid around the implant.

Based on the most current data, the risk of BIA-ALCL with Allergan BIOCELL textured implants is approximately 6 times the risk of BIA-ALCL with textured implants from other manufacturers. While the risk of developing BIA-ALCL is low, if not discovered and treated early, it can lead to death.

According to the FDA, the textured implants manufactured by Allergan, represent less than 5% of breast implants sold in the U.S.

Reasons Which Implants Are Being Recalled?

The products included in the Allergan Natrelle BIOCELL Textured Products recall are:
• Allergan Natrelle Saline-Filled Textured Breast Implants
• Allergan Natrelle Silicone-Filled Textured Breast Implants
• Allergan Natrelle® 410 Highly Cohesive Anatomically Shaped Silicone- Filled Textured Breast Implants
• Allergan Natrelle 133 Plus Tissue Expander
• Allergan Natrelle 133 Tissue Expander with Suture Tabs

What Should You Do?

If you are not showing any symptoms, it is not recommended to the remove any of these or other types of breast implants due to the low risk of developing BIA-ALCL.

Anyone with breast implants, regardless of brand, should familiarize themselves with the symptoms of BIA-ALCL, which include swelling, masses, pain, firmness or changes in size or shape of the breast. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, you should be evaluated immediately.
